Working With Adults

When working with adults the Occupational therapist has an overriding goal of helping individuals regain or maintain a level of independence that will allow them to be as safe and functional as possible for as long as possible. In addition to assessing the family home to ensure it can be accessed safely an Occupational therapist may prescribe specialised equipment to assist in maintaining ones independence.

This may include walking frames, wheelchairs, toilet aids, hoists, slings, hi- low beds and specialised seating that may be custom made to suit the person. Occupational therapists are unique in that they look at the whole picture when it comes to a person and the issues they present with. This involves analysing the task that needs to be performed, and the environment in which the task takes place. They find creative solutions and offer advice along with adaptive equipment that will assist an individual maintain his/ her independence and dignity.

Service Options (Clinic)

Coastwide Therapy services utilises a dynamic, fully equipped Sensory Integration "Engine Room", specialised and set up to meet your child's needs. Using standardised and non-standardised assessments along with the information collected from parents the Occupational Therapist will set achievable and meaningful goals collaboratively.

The Occupational therapist will combine therapeutic techniques with a play-based, fun approach to therapy. Parents will be engaged in the therapeutic process as research shows that unless parents understand and can replicate interventions at home a half hour clinic session, once a week will not reach the best outcome for the child.

The Occupational therapist will guide your child through a process of discovering how their body works and what it can do, to promote the development of the skills and confidence they need to successfully participate in all that life has to offer.Coastwide Therapy Services also has space to see adults at the clinic. Initial consultations, equipment prescription, postural evaluations, manual handling assessments etc can be done at the clinic should the individual choose.

Home based sessions can be more suitable for younger children, not yet at school, however home visits can also be arranged for older children who may prefer the comfort of their home environment.

Home based therapy provides a unique opportunity for the Occupational Therapist to interact with the individual in their day to day home environment. It also allows you direct contact with your therapist in your own home to provide support and recommendations based on your needs and how interventions can be based around those things already existing in the home eg routines, layout, toys etc.

Additional costs do occur for visits outside the clinic.

School / Pre School Visits

School based Assessment and intervention programs can provide convenient therapy services at your child's primary or pre-school. Therapy is conducted either in your child's classroom or they can be withdrawn from their class, utilising a private therapy space within the school, depending on your child's needs.

This approach means the therapist can have direct access to your child's teacher to provide support and recommendations based on your child's needs, observe student performance and monitor your child's progress on a regular basis.

Occupational therapy sessions can be invoiced to the school, pre-school, parents or other agencies for either full or part of the payment. Additional costs do occur for visits outside the clinic.

In addition to supporting relationships between a child and their family members, we are committed to facilitating meaningful relationships with peers. We may recommend individual sessions first, and when ready, a dyad (two children and one therapist), followed by larger groups if/ when possible. During these groups we continue to work on the identified goals eg fine/ gross motor, sensory regulation, school readiness whilst incorporating the social understanding and bond between friends.

Fussy Eating Groups

Fussy Eating groups assists children who are fussy eaters and those who have limited diets (based on food colour, texture, smell, food group, and more) to develop their eating habits using an individualised or group model. Our program is based on the SOS approach to feeding and allows children to learn about, explore, play with and test different foods. Individual sessions may be recommended first before moving to a small group model.
